Summary

The discovery of a missing Amish bishop's remains leads chief of police Kate Burkholder to unearth a chilling secret in The Hidden One, a new thriller from bestselling author Linda Castillo。

Over a decade ago, beloved Amish bishop Ananias Stoltzfus disappeared without a trace。 The mystery of what happened to the kind old man has troubled his community for years。 When skeletal remains showing evidence of foul play are unearthed and linked to the bishop, his disappearance becomes even more sinister。

Unhappy with the local investigation, Amish elders arrive in Painters Mill and ask chief of police Kate Burkholder for help。 Realizing she has a personal connection to the crime, Kate travels to Pennsylvania’s Kishacoquillas Valley, an isolated area where the Amish culture differs dramatically from the traditions in which she was raised。 Kate learns that Stoltzfus was charismatic and highly respected, but she soon begins to hear other things, too: that there was something ‘off’ about the bishop。 He sometimes seemed unfamiliar with the local culture, and kept quiet about his past。 Did this kindly old man have something to hide?

Someone doesn’t want Kate asking those questions。 But even after being accosted and threatened in the dead of night, Kate refuses to back down。 When an Amish woman with ties to the bishop turns up dead, the investigation reaches a boiling point。 There’s a killer in the Valley who will stop at nothing to keep the past buried。 Will they get to Kate before she can expose the truth? Or will the bishop’s secrets remain hidden forever?

I can always depend on a Castillo mystery to make me drop everything and read it in one sitting。 The Hidden One was no exception。 I devoured it。 Kate is a fierce police chief who stops at nothing to solve her homicide cases。 I highly recommend setting aside time to solve Kate's current case。 I can always depend on a Castillo mystery to make me drop everything and read it in one sitting。 The Hidden One was no exception。 I devoured it。 Kate is a fierce police chief who stops at nothing to solve her homicide cases。 I highly recommend setting aside time to solve Kate's current case。 。。。more

As much as these books are focused on Kate Burkholder and the crimes she investigates it is about the love she has for Tomasetti and him for her。 looking forward to the next installment。

The Hidden One by Linda Castillo has Kate Burkholder leaving her usual jurisdiction to help solve a murder。 Someone from her past is accused of the murder。 A completely riveting read that dives into more of Kate’s past。 I loved the flashbacks and glimpses into Kate’s Amish life before she left to become a police officer。 She is one of the most fascinating main characters I ever had the pleasure to read in a mystery。 The plot is engaging but not easy to solve。 Kate is there to help solve the murd The Hidden One by Linda Castillo has Kate Burkholder leaving her usual jurisdiction to help solve a murder。 Someone from her past is accused of the murder。 A completely riveting read that dives into more of Kate’s past。 I loved the flashbacks and glimpses into Kate’s Amish life before she left to become a police officer。 She is one of the most fascinating main characters I ever had the pleasure to read in a mystery。 The plot is engaging but not easy to solve。 Kate is there to help solve the murder n which a teenage love has been accused。 However, her help is not wanted by the local law enforcement and it seems others too。 Even though she was asked to come to this town。 So much going on that it is hard to put down until you know who committed the foul play。 Another winner is the Kate Burkholder series。 The Hidden One may be number fourteen in the series not counting short novellas but it is still just as compelling of a read。 Maybe more so since Kate feels like a more of a friend than a character in a book if you have been following the series like me。 If you are new to the series it reads well on its own too。An ARC of the book was provided by the publisher through NetGalley which I voluntarily chose to read and reviewed。 All thoughts and opinions are my own。 。。。more

This is the first book I’ve “read” by Linda Castillo, and although it’s #14 in her Kate Burkholder series, the flashbacks made it easy to enjoy as a stand-alone novel。 I would be tempted to go back and catch up on the earlier books except for the coarse language and occasional violence。 That was also the difference between a4 and 5 star rating for me。 Otherwise, the writing and pacing were crisp and kept me on the edge of my seat。 This clever mystery plays on the violent death of an cruel Amish This is the first book I’ve “read” by Linda Castillo, and although it’s #14 in her Kate Burkholder series, the flashbacks made it easy to enjoy as a stand-alone novel。 I would be tempted to go back and catch up on the earlier books except for the coarse language and occasional violence。 That was also the difference between a4 and 5 star rating for me。 Otherwise, the writing and pacing were crisp and kept me on the edge of my seat。 This clever mystery plays on the violent death of an cruel Amish bishop - anomalies in the gentle, pacifist Amish culture。 The man jailed in this not-so-cold case is Kate’s first love, whom she hasn’t seen in decades。 Motivated to right old wrongs, Kate overcomes stubborn silences, dusty memories, personal threats, and nearly deadly assaults to unearth the truth。 I really enjoyed the twists right up to the end! The Hidden One is #14 in the Kate Burkholder series and once again, Linda Castillo has penned an engrossing, gripping story。 This edition finds Kate investigating a case where an old friend has been arrested for murder。 The Bishop and elders from the Amish Community in Pennsylvania where Jonas Bowman lives, have come to ask Kate to see what she can do to clear Jonas Bowman in the 20 year old murder of Bishop Ananias Stoltzfus。 Although Kate has no authority in Pennsylvania, she remembers Jonas f The Hidden One is #14 in the Kate Burkholder series and once again, Linda Castillo has penned an engrossing, gripping story。 This edition finds Kate investigating a case where an old friend has been arrested for murder。 The Bishop and elders from the Amish Community in Pennsylvania where Jonas Bowman lives, have come to ask Kate to see what she can do to clear Jonas Bowman in the 20 year old murder of Bishop Ananias Stoltzfus。 Although Kate has no authority in Pennsylvania, she remembers Jonas from their teenage years, and is sure that he couldn't have killed anyone。 She has an in with the Amish Community and knows what to ask, and how to talk to them。 Will she be able to find the evidence and convince the local police to look elsewhere? This was a very different Kate Burkholder story as Kate was not investigating this crime for work, but took some time off and traveled out of her jurisdiction to do something she felt the need to do for an old friend, something you owed him。 I love how smart Kate is, her wonderful instincts, her excellent questioning ability, he understanding of the Amish Community and her persistence。 With her working alone in this case, it is no wonder she finds herself in danger and taking chances, which is the one thing that bothers me about this strong female police officer。 As Kate investigates and digs into the victim, it seems Bishop Stoltzfus is not the loved Bishop everyone has made him out to be。 There are several suspects that need to be investigated。 Along with some great leads, there are also a lot of red herrings。 Of course, Kate solves the case, but it is a story that hooked me and carried me along right to the end。 The murderer was not even on my radar, but it totally made sense when all was revealed。 Kathleen McInerney, does a wonderful job with the narration of this audiobook。 She reads at a nice pace and has a pleasant, easy to listen to, voice。 I have come to identify Kate's voice and enjoy listening to this series。 It definitely adds to my enjoyment of the story。 You don't need to read all these books in order to enjoy The Hidden One, but it definitely helps understand the growth of the characters and their relationships。 The publisher generously provided me with a copy of this book upon request。 The rating, ideas and opinions shared are my own。 。。。more

This was a solid three and a half stars, but I’m rounding up because I’m nice。 This was the fourteenth book featuring police chief, Kate Burkholder, of which I had previously read zero。 Had I known that this was one in a long series, I probably wouldn’t have requested it; I hate jumping into a bunch of history between characters that the author assumes we already know。 There seemed to be a little of that here, but not too bad。 The story itself was pretty good - the remains of an Amish bishop are This was a solid three and a half stars, but I’m rounding up because I’m nice。 This was the fourteenth book featuring police chief, Kate Burkholder, of which I had previously read zero。 Had I known that this was one in a long series, I probably wouldn’t have requested it; I hate jumping into a bunch of history between characters that the author assumes we already know。 There seemed to be a little of that here, but not too bad。 The story itself was pretty good - the remains of an Amish bishop are uncovered years after he went missing, and another member of the community has been arrested for his murder。 Kate is pulled into the fray due to her former life as an Amish girl and her previous ties to the accused。 A lot of of police stuff follows, some predictable, some not。 I listened to the audiobook and always forget to mention that Netgalley audiobooks are trash。 The sound quality is horrible and they’re glitchy as well。 Thanks to #netgalley and #minotaurbooks for this #arc of #thehiddenone in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more
